Beyond Surviving...THRIVING!

I came from a place where I spent everything I got.  Now, I don’t do that; I make a list, and I go to the store for the things that I need.  I really like the place that I’m at…I like being financially responsible.”  —Shauntina

You may remember Shauntina’s homeownership story from a few years ago. Through the PROJECT:Reclaim program, individuals are able to purchase a home on a contract-for-deed basis and receive financial literacy coaching and training until they meet financing standards.

This last year, Shauntina took her PROJECT:Reclaim success to the next level.  As it’s currently structured, the goal is for families to accomplish refinancing 2-4 years after their purchase.  Shauntina, however, did it within 20 months! Having been empowered by a plan, a support system, and strong personal determination, she was able to complete the arduous process of enhancing her credit, building her savings and refinancing her loan.  She is now reaping the benefits of lower interest rates, lower monthly payments and confidence in her financial situation.  When asked how it feels, she replied, “That mortgage is so…it’s LOVELY!”

For Shauntina, the success has been significant for her, but more importantly, it has and will shape her son’s future.  “The biggest thing is that I can save something for Tre.  My parents couldn’t put money away for college, and I can do differently.  My son won’t have to take out student loans or worry about whether or not he can go to college!”
