2025 Emerson Ave N: Jubilee!
Housing Link, a low income rental housing resource, published a statistic in December 2005 stating that of nearly 1,600 advertised rental units, only 5 were affordable for people making $10.00 an hour or less. All of the other “affordable” housing units are subsidized by the Section 8 governmental assistance program.
In August of 2006, Urban Homeworks bought the Jubilee House, a twelve-unit building situated in north Minneapolis, just north of the intersection of W Broadway Ave and Emerson Ave N. We are excited that through a collaboration between Christ Presbyterian Church, Kwanzaa Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church Center for Families and Urban Homeworks (UHW), we can now offer these rental units without a government subsidy to people who need the housing and make as low as $10.00 an hour!
Each organization plays an important role in making the vision for this project a reality and is the first of its kind for Urban Homeworks. Christ Presbyterian Church provided a grant to purchase the building so that Urban Homeworks can charge rents that are affordable to people making as low as $10 an hour. Kwanzaa, Fellowship and the Center for Families are providing support services to help each family take a step toward stability, employment and self-sufficiency. Urban Homeworks provides the property management and the frontline interaction with the tenants living in this building.
Urban Homeworks is planning to replicate this model with all of our housing units. The “Hope Homes” subsidy drive would enable the families and Urban Homeworks to be less dependent on the governmental system.
